The figure shows the location of Ladies Garment Manufacturers in 1900 and 1922. The industry grew from Canal Street to 14th Street along Broadway and employed the newly-arrived immigrants living in the Lower East Side. In the 1920s, the garment manufactures moved their cluster northward, mostly north of 34th Street. Here they could be perfectly situated between Penn Station and the city’s shopping hub near around Herald Square and Fifth Avenue.
